Pick and Pass Piece Pick System

Flexible Zone

Overview

The Dematic Pick and Pass Piece Pick System is ideal for operations where most orders have picks in every zone. The system uses a conveyor network to pass shipping containers from zone to zone. Light-directed pick equipment instruct operators to pick the items from flow racks and place them into containers, which are then passed onto the next zone. The system supports operations that need to pick, pack, and ship orders quickly and accurately.

Typical applications include retailers that need to replenish brick & mortar stores and business-to-business wholesaler/distributors with one or more of the following challenges:

  • High SKU commonality
  • Consistent points of distribution (retail stores)
  • High throughput rates
  • Need for process improvement
  • Seasonal and promotional peaks
  • Need to accommodate future growth

Benefits

  • More throughput capacity, accommodates more SKUs
  • Increased pick rates
  • Creates aisle-ready loads for easy store shelf re-stocking
  • Increases order accuracy
  • Synchronized workflows
  • Real-time control, visibility, and insight to operations

System description

The Dematic Pick and Pass Piece Pick System has a pre-engineered, standardized design configuration that ensures predictable order picking performance.

System management

The Warehouse Management System (WMS) is responsible for inventory management, receiving, and put away into the pick modules. Furthermore, the WMS directs the palletizing process at shipping. The Dematic Warehouse Execution System (WES) software manages order picking and sorting. Orders are sent from the WMS to the WES typically as discrete orders.

The Dematic WES software includes supervisor interface screens such as: global view of picking, pick performance, system progress, order information, picks per operator, and total picks.

Comparison

Dematic piece picking systems are more accurate, require less labor to operate, and use less warehouse space than conventional piece picking systems.

Conventional Person-to-Goods Piece Pick Pick-and-Pass System
Large footprint (single-level pick module) Smaller system footprint (multi-level pick module)
Handheld device for picking instructions Pick-to-light, hands-free picking, fast
Low to moderate pick rates High pick rates
Non-strategic picking Strategic and synchronized picking
Less throughput capacity More throughput capacity
Manual sorting of order totes at palletizing area Automated convey and sort of totes at palletizing area
Limited visibility and insight Good visibility and insight
